The San Dimas High School theater program, which involves K-12 performers from across the Bonita Unified School District, is off to a tremendous start for the 2017-2018 season! This comes on the heels of the successful 2016-2017 season, which garnered three National Youth Arts awards winners (including Performer of the year, Brooke Boyd) and an additional fourteen nominations, as well as Jerry Herman best actor and actress nominations for our cast of Cabaret!
We are beyond excited to soon finish casting our fall musical theatre production of The Sound of Music, which will be presented in the Bonita Center for the Arts the first week of November. Our family-friendly show’s main purpose is to enrich the lives of theater goers and theater doers of all ages, and to provide affordable and high-quality theatrical opportunities to Bonita Unified School District students, staff, faculty, alumni, family, and friends who otherwise would not have such an opportunity.
Close on the heels of the musical, we will go into production of our Sainted Players production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which will also be held in the Bonita Center for the Arts. The purpose of the Sainted Players show is to take SDHS Drama to a higher level. Participation is by invitation only. It is an honor to be nominated for a Sainted Players production as selections have been made based upon previously displayed and noted talent, dedication, and hard work on the part of BUSD students who have been involved in other SDHS shows.
Following Hunchback, we will begin production of our yearly play. We are excited to announce that the yet to be announced play will be presented in our new blackbox theatre space at SDHS, ClouD9!
To finish off the year, the student directors of SDHS Drama will bring you our yearly variety show, which will be held in San Dimas High School’s ClouD9. The purpose of The Variety Show is to showcase student directorial and production endeavors. This annual fundraiser is a compilation of scenes, songs, dances, and musical theater numbers tailored to a pre-determined theme. This year’s theme, “Award Winners” will feature scenes, monologues, songs, and musical theater numbers from plays, musicals, TV shows, and films which have won awards.
The students in our program receive training from fully-credentialed theater and music teachers. The main difference between our theater group and others in the area is that our educational program, being a public school program, is COMPLETELY FREE for performers to participate in. This kind of experience could cost a pupil hundreds of dollars in a local community or not-for-profit educational theater group.
Since 2009, we have been performing award-winning plays and musicals in the MPR at Lone Hill Middle School, in-the-round in SDHS’s Performing Arts room, and on the stage in the beautiful new Bonita Center for the Arts, located next door to us at San Dimas High School. This year we are excited to be using our new ClouD9 space as well! SDHS Drama relies heavily upon ticket sales, refreshment sales, fund raisers, and monetary donations to the drama club to purchase everything we need for our productions: Script rentals and performance rights ($500-$5000 per show); costumes (approximately $50 per costume); scenery, props, and furniture ($500-$5000 per show), lighting instrument rentals ($1000-$2000 per show that we do outside of the BCA), and more. Our hope is to raise funds for the aforementioned through business sponsorships. In return for your tax-deductible donation we would like to offer the following incentives to you:
